How can I clean the br sections of my gas fireplace without scratching the metal.?

I think the culprit is my Persian cat. I was away and nobody noticed. As a consequence there are green spots and streaks! The acid in the urine seems to have eaten into the metal! Help! It's such a mess! Think there was a layer of varnish or laquer on the br too.
